Tinabo Island

DESCRIPTION OF HABITAT

Tinabo Island is located in the Taka Bonerate Islands of Indonesia. It sits within the Flores Sea and is part of the South Sulawesi province. The area is characterised by shallow waters with sandy substrates and coral reefs (Muhidin et al. 2020).

The area is influenced by monsoon seasons. The northwest monsoon (December–February) brings low-speed winds and high rainfall while the southeast monsoon (June–August) brings high-speed winds and lower precipitation (Herdiana et al. 2024).

The area overlaps with the Taka Bonerate National Park, a marine protected area.

This Important Shark and Ray Area is benthopelagic and is delineated from inshore and surface waters (0 m) to 20 m based on the depth range of Qualifying Species in the area.

CRITERION A

VULNERABILITY

One Qualifying Species within the area is considered threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Blacktip Reef Shark is assessed as Vulnerable (Simpfendorfer et al. 2020).

CRITERION C

SUB-CRITERION C1 – REPRODUCTIVE AREAS

Tinabo Island is an important reproductive area for one shark species.

Since 2010, aggregations of Blacktip Reef Sharks have been observed regularly in the area by direct observations and Baited Remote Underwater Video Station surveys (Alpian 2023; Muhidin pers. obs. 2024). These observations have also been confirmed by interviews with local communities in the area and animals are commonly seen by tourists (Rahman pers. obs. 2024). Aggregations of 10–60 individuals occur year-round in sandy areas and coral reefs around the island (Alpian 2023; Muhidin pers. obs. 2024). Blacktip Reef Sharks observed in the area measure 35–60 cm total length (TL), which is similar to the known size-at-birth for the species (30–52 cm TL; Ebert et al. 2021). Considering Blacktip Reef Sharks are seen year-round, it is likely that Tinabo Island is a nursery area for this species.
