Jaconé
DESCRIPTION OF HABITAT
Jaconé is located in Brazil. The area is situated off the cities of Maricá and Saquarema in Rio de Janeiro state. It is characterised by benthic complexity comprised of a stable inner continental shelf featuring beachrock formations (Mansur et al. 2011).
Jaconé is situated within a high-energy coastal system influenced by the westward advection of cold, nutrient-rich plumes of South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) originating from the Arraial do Cabo upwelling (Lins-de-Barros et al. 2018). This combination of stable structural habitat and the periodic arrival of nutrient-enriched waters create a favourable environment for demersal species (Oddone & Vooren 2008).
This Important Shark and Ray Area is benthic and is delineated from inshore and surface waters (0 m) to 300 m based on the global depth range of Qualifying Species.
CRITERION A
VULNERABILITY
One Qualifying Species considered threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species regularly occurs in the area. This is the Critically Endangered Spotback Skate (Pollom et al. 2020).
CRITERION B
RANGE RESTRICTED
This area holds the regular presence of Spotback Skate as a resident range-restricted species. The species occurs year-round in the area and is regularly recorded in landings from industrial and artisanal fisheries (Fundação Instituto de Pesca do Estado do Rio de Janeiro [FIPERJ] unpubl. data 2011–2024). Based on data collected by FIPERJ through its fish landing monitoring projects between 2011 to 2024, there were 5,427 records of Spotback Skates landed along the Rio de Janeiro state coastline across ~20,425 fishing days, totalling 681,927 kg for all captures among all fleets (averaging 30.4 kg per fishing day). A kernel utilisation density analysis was performed and revealed a hotspot within Jaconé, where 956 records of Spotback Skates were documented over 1,813 fishing days, comprising 63,630 kg or 35.1 kg per fishing day (15% higher than adjacent areas), and represented 17.6% of all records from the broader region (despite representing >1% of the spatial extent of the broader catch area; FIPERJ unpubl. data 2011–2024). The lack of significant monthly variation in captures further supports the resident nature of the species in the area (FIPERJ unpubl. data 2011–2024). Spotback Skate occurs in the South Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (LME) and the Patagonian Shelf LME.
